Chikungunya symptoms are similar to diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, Leptospirosis and hence misleading. Chikungunya was known as Dengue fever for a long time. There is little difference between Chikungunya and Dengue as far as symptoms are concerned. In some patients, joint pains in Chikungunya patient may persist for quite a long time if not treated properly. Chikungunya is rarely fatal.
Onset of Symptoms of Chikungunya : After the bite of carrier mosquito it takes 1 to 12 days before the symptoms are seen. Chikungunya typically starts with symptoms like that of other viral diseases i.e. - Fever, Chills, Nausea, Vomiting, Headache and multiple joint pains. The fever is usually high and may go upto 103-104 degree fahrenheit. Symptom onset is almost always sudden in nature and is accompanied by rashes, redness in eyes and severe joint pains.
General Symptoms : High grade fever, rashes on limbs and trunk, extreme weakness, loss of appetite, bachache and headache.
Differentiating Symptom : The most marked symptom of Chicungunya is debilitating multiple arthalgia. It becomes difficult for a patient to walk or even lift a glass of water.
Skin Symptoms : Maculopapular rashes like ulcers over arms, legs, trunk, scrotum, crural areas and axillae.
Nasal blotchy erythema
Freckle-like pigmentation over centro-facial area
Flagellate pigmentation on face and extremities
Lichenoid eruption and hyperpigmentation in photodistributed areas
Multiple aphthous ulcers
Lymphoedema
Multiple ecchymotic spots (Children)
Vesiculobullous lesions (infants)
Subungual haemorrhage.
